Read until the end to discover which activities we are talking about and to get some useful tips for your next family vacation in Italy!
Activity 1
One time, we drove up the mountain in our car and parked there. Then, we continued on foot and hiked into the forest. But it wasn't far at all, because we soon reached the mountain station of a cable car. There were two restaurants there and we ate in one of them. There was also a delicious Kaiserschmarrn with lots of icing sugar for me. Next to the restaurant was the biggest playground I've ever seen, with a slackline, a climbing wall, in-ground trampolines, a wobble course and much more! And then we went down the mountain in an Alpine coaster. At the end, it pulls you back up to the start, but we got off at the bottom and walked back to the car. That was great fun!
Activity 2
I was once on a family vacation in the mountains. We set off one day and my parents said that there was a surprise for me. We drove to a farm in a small village near Merano. When we got out of the car, the air was cooler and fresher, but it also smelled a bit like horses. I turned round and then I saw that there were four big blonde horses on the yard, already wearing saddles. Mum said that we would now go for a ride. Then we spent a few hours out in the forest with the horses and I felt like a princess in a fairy tale!
Activity 3
I really like animals and Mum and Dad promised me that we would do something with animals on our family holiday in the Alps. I've often been to the circus and also to a dolphin show, but on this day, we went to a place where there were lots of birds. They live in cages where you can look at them, but twice a day they are also allowed out. Then you can watch them fly while a man tells you what the birds are called and how they live. I would like to be able to fly like the birds sometimes!
Activity 4
My parents like the mountains, but I don't like them that much. When I'm outside, I prefer to play instead of walking for hours. But on this mountain, us kids could do a lot: There was a huge playground with slides, trampolines, sandpits, and a mini cable car, and we could also do archery and pet animals like goats, ponies, llamas, and rabbits. There were also pigs and cows, but I preferred not to touch them. After lunch at the mountain restaurant, we went climbing: not on a rock, but on ropes attached to the trees. I was a bit scared at first, but then it was really fun!
Activity 5
I always thought that it was boring in the city, but there are also activities for families in Merano that are really awesome! Once we took a super old chairlift up a hill and then walked back into town. It was easy because it was all downhill. We had a drink in the town, Mum and Dad had a coffee and I had a juice. At the bar there were even tricycles, a separate children's table, and a sandpit to play in. And the best thing is that we went swimming for a bit afterwards. In this swimming pool, there were many pools outside and inside, cold and warm, and also a children's pool.

Activity 1 - Merano 2000 with Outdoor Kids Camp and Alpin Bob
The Merano 2000 hiking area directly above the spa town is ideal for a family holiday in Italy. The hike from Falzeben to Piffinger Köpfl takes just under an hour and is easy to do. Once there, the Piffinger Köpfl mountain hut and the Panorama Bistro await you for an enjoyable break. At the Outdoor Kids Camp, the little ones can let off steam on educational facilities, while the Alpin Bob, the longest Alpine coaster in Italy, promises a speedy descent and fun for the young and the old. The hiking trail, the Outdoor Kids Camp and the Alpin Bob are open all year round and are therefore suitable for both a summer and winter family vacation.
Activity 2 - Horse riding in Avelengo
The picturesque village of Avelengo above Merano is famous for its Haflinger horses. The Haflinger horse was first bred in South Tyrol in the 19th century and was initially used primarily as a packhorse and workhorse. Over time, however, it became apparent that the good-natured character of the Haflinger horse made it a suitable mount for children and beginners. Today, horse riding is one of the most popular things to do with kids in South Tyrol, both in winter and summer. Introductory lessons can be booked as well as longer rides in the forests and mountains of Merano and environs.
Activity 3 – Flight demonstration in Tirolo
The Bird Rescue Centre in Tirolo, Gufyland, organises a flight demonstration with eagles, vultures, falcons, owls, and buzzards every day except Mondays at 11:15 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. The animals can be observed in free flight while visitors receive interesting information about the species. By visiting the flight demonstration, you not only give yourself and your loved ones a unique experience, but you also support the rescue centre in its valuable work. This activity is recommended during the warmer months of the year.
Activity 4 - Taser Alm
A visit to the Taser Alm is also ideal for a family holiday in the Alps in summer. Situated above Scena and easily accessible by car, the Taser Alm is a true outdoor paradise for children. There is not only a 1,000m2 adventure playground, but also an archery range, a mountain zoo where it’s possible to pet animals, and the Taser high ropes course with a 60m long flying fox and a 45m long suspension bridge for all those looking for a thrill.
Activity 5 - City tour with a visit to the thermal baths
A tour through Merano with children is ideal in spring, summer, or autumn. From Wosching Haus it’s only a few minutes' walk to the historic chairlift to Tirolo. The subsequent walk back to the centre of Merano is easy to manage and delights adults with its fantastic view of the Merano basin. The café at the Wandelhalle is particularly suitable for families thanks to its child-friendly facilities. And for the necessary relaxation at the end of the day, take a 2- or 3-hour detour to the thermal baths of Merano, where the grown-ups can relax, and the little ones can have fun and variety.
And how many activities did you guess? Were there any surprises?
